Our Galleria area Houston, TX client is seeking a Engineering Business Analyst (Senior Commercial Advisor / Manager).

Responsibilities:

The senior commercial advisor will provide commercial/business analysis and support to the exploration function and business unit functions.  The role is responsible for exploration portfolio analysis, managing the exploration portfolio maturation and managing key aspects of our business plan.  The incumbent will play a critical role in the Business Unit strategy development and in helping the Business Unit monitor and achieve critical business objectives and KPIs.  Additionally the role will ensure commercial and contractual compliance and is expected to play a vital role within key commercial negotiations and contracts.

Primary Deliverables

  • Exploration Planning:  Maintain and Manage the Exploration LRP (Long Range Plan).
  • Business Planning:  Manage and oversee budget and planning cycle(s) and KPI reporting.  Play critical role in strategy development.
  • Commercial Management:  Manage commercial processes and oversee economic analysis (actual evaluations and assurance)

Detailed Deliverables

Exploration Planning

  • Maintain and Manage the Exploration LRP (Long Range Plan) and Exploration portfolio (commercially)
  • Conduct Exploration Competitor Analysis and utilize same in guiding/moulding the business unit’s exploration strategies/tactics.
  • Provide Exploration Business Support (G&A, budgets, etc.)
  • Maintain and Manage the Exploration Inventory Maturation process from a commercial perspective.
  • Manage and conduct Exploration Economic Analysis – work in conjunction with appropriate asset/opportunity team analysis as necessary.
  • Familiarity with exploration volumetric and risk assessment tools and techniques (GEOX, Pete Rose, etc.); ability to critically assess inputs from a commercial perspective.
  • Lead assurance process for the exploration process
  • Act as contact point for quarterly exploration portfolio reviews and with Headquarters.

Business Unit Planning

  • Manage and oversee budget and planning cycle(s); work in conjunction with business analyst(s) on the budget/planning cycle.
  • Manage and oversee KPI and BU P&L reporting function; work in conjunction with business analyst(s) on the KPI reporting process.
  • Maintain appropriate database for all Business Unit economic analysis and manage database/systems for efficient aggregation of investments.  Continue to improve system(s) to increase transparency of expectations and to allow for scenario planning of various investment and business strategies.
  • Conduct competitor analysis and utilize same in guiding/moulding the business unit strategies/tactics.

Commercial Management

  • Manage commercial processes; ensure commercial assurance on key projects.
  • Conduct (or oversee) key economic investment analysis;  provide consultation and assurance for asset teams conducting evaluations;  conduct complex risk analysis and economic assessments with the ability to communicate complex issues into simple and digested formats.
  • Ensure commercial compliance.
  • Manage and oversee various corporate liaison functions including WMS standards system, business audits, etc.
  • Ensure seamless blend (approach and systems) between exploration planning approach (Exploration LRP) and Business Unit planning approach (CPD)
  • Involvement in key negotiations
  • Work with teams developing investment opportunities to utilize the integrated phase gate project management roadmap and appropriate upstream commercial strategies to manage commercial risks and optimize value.

Required Qualifications:

  • BS in Business, Engineering or Geoscience
  • At least 2 years within an upstream oil and gas company AND an MBA from a business school or at least 6+ years in a commercial analysis role in an upstream oil and gas company
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the current and up to date commercial techniques, thinking, concepts and trends as it relates to utilization in an E&P company
  • Excellent demonstrable communication and presentation skills
  • Team player and self-starter
  • Fluent written and spoken English
  • Ability and willingness to do periodic travel including overseas
  • Advanced economic and investment cash flow analysis including risking techniques

Preferred Qualifications:

  • At least 5-6 years experience in a commercial role specific to deep water Gulf of Mexico
  • MBA from top business school
  • Experience with JV decision making processes
  • Experience preparing and presenting at a senior leader or board level
  • Exposure to industry consultant databases: WoodMac, IHS, OWL, etc.
  • Advanced abilities in AIRES, GeoX, Rose Exploration analysis, etc.

Key software/databases:

  • Advanced abilities with Commercially available Economic modeling packages
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills including cash-flow analysis
  • Proficiency in PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with GeoX risk & volume evaluation
