Our Downtown Houston, TX client is seeking a Senior Financial Analyst with technical accounting research skills.

This person will assist in the implementation of new accounting pronouncements, including international financial reporting standards (IFRS) and with accounting research and preparation of accounting

memos and white papers documenting the Company’s policy and rationale with respect to

technical accounting and reporting matters. Complex areas of research may include:

(1) accounting for business acquisitions and divestitures

(2) debt and equity transactions

(3) consolidation and assessment of variable interest entities

(4) annual and interim impairment assessments

(5) fair value measurement and disclosure

(6) accounting for financial instruments, including commodity derivatives and hedge accounting. Implementation of IFRS will include working with an interdepartmental team that will be formed to address and incorporate IFRS into the Company’s reporting system.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists the Manager of Special Projects with financial analysis, special purpose financial statements, and projections depending on transaction scenarios selected.
  • Reviews periodic filings and monthly financial statements, including investor presentations and press releases.
  • Maintains a strong understanding of US GAAP, IFRS and SEC guidelines.
  • Maintains current understanding of the FASB, IASB, SEC and other regulatory bodies’ projects in order to keep management apprised of pending decisions that will impact the Company.
  • Maintains a strong understanding of new accounting pronouncements and how they will impact the Company. Works with Manager of Special Projects to determine implementation methodology and time-line. Prepares memos and accounting white papers describing the implementation and resolution of accounting issues regarding the implementation. Assists in the coordination with other departments, to revise procedures required to complete implementations. Assists in updating SOX procedures for any new implementation work completed.
  • Working knowledge of IFRS and assists with the planning and implementation of IFRS for the Company. Assists and participates in interdepartmental team meetings, and through effective leadership and management, completes assigned projects to determine changes required to the Company’s current accounting methods to comply with IFRS. Identifies information and resources required and works with the team to resolve the method of implementation. Assists in determining timelines for completion and end products. Documents results for senior management and external auditors.
  • Assists in representing financial reporting group in the preparation of debt and equity offerings. Reviews offering documents, coordinates due diligence by underwriters, prepares pro forma financial information and coordinates with external auditors.
  • Assists in the review of investor relations and treasury presentations on an ad hoc basis.
  • Assists with review of earnings releases and press releases and prepares supporting workpaper files.
  • Works with other departments within accounting to research accounting questions/issues from senior management.
  • Serves as an example to peers by promoting independent thinking, sound judgment and sound decision-making.
  • Maintains quality, and meets turnaround time standards.
  • Works with auditors to provide requested information on quarterly and annual audits.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and CPA is required.
  • A minimum of four years of public accounting experience or equivalent industry experience. Oil and gas industry experience preferred.
  • Ability to research complex technical accounting issues, reach conclusions regarding accounting and disclosure, and present findings to a Manager.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including excellent organizational ability.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret journals, financial reports and legal documents.
  • Must possess excellent oral communication skills, including ability to effectively present information to senior management.
  • Must possess excellent written communication skills including ability to write advanced reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Also requires strong workpaper documentation skills.
  • Strong problem resolution skills including ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  • Must be detail-oriented and results-oriented with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Flexibility to work overtime as needed by position and supervisor.
  • Excellent time management skills including ability to prioritize work and the work of others effectively.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Effectively maintain good relations with others.
