Our Washington DC area healthcare client is looking for a Risk Manager to join their team on an Interim, consulting basis.

General Summary:
The Director of Risk Management provides planning, organization and administration of the hospital’s risk management program and associated patient safety initiatives.   This includes assessment, direction, and administration of the activities relating to the organization’s proactive risk management program.  Responsibilities also include coordination of or participation in activities for state, federal and accrediting bodies, systems improvement, and Joint Commission accreditation survey activity. Performs and coordinates additional risk management activities and patient safety projects at the request of the Executive Team.
Administers the hospital –wide Risk Management Program. Maintains the occurrence-reporting database. Analyzes occurrence report for trends and patterns that may represent latent patient safety/risk management concerns. Analyzes actual and potential claims and lawsuits. Manages claims in coordination with system risk management, legal counsel, and outside counsel (position functions as the hospital’s liaison to outside counsel for professional liability matters). Collaborates with hospital finance department in managing and minimizing financial losses. Participates as a member of the Institutional Research and Review Board. Provides education to staff and physicians on risk management issues. Functions as risk management advisor and resource 24/7 via pager. Communicates and coordinates with hospital clinical leaders regarding risk management issues that cross departments to facilitate hospital-wide transparency and risk reduction. Proactively and intentionally develops and sustains a just culture of safety.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:
Undergraduate degree required.
Juris Doctorate preferred.
Clinical background required (preferably in nursing).
Three to Five years’ experience in the field of health care risk management, including regulatory compliance.
Investigation of occurrences, claims management, occurrence reporting database management.
Proficiency in PC skills such as the Windows work environment, Word, Excel, PowerPoint GroupWise preferred.
Excellent verbal/written communication skills.
Strong organizational skills and ability to synthesize pertinent statistical information.
Ability to maintain the confidentiality of quality assessments, compliance information, and sensitive information.
Ability to work independently and handle a multi-task, fast-paced environment.
Ability to cope with frequent interruptions effectively while maintaining productivity.
Strong customer service skills on the telephone and face to face contact.
Ability to foster interdisciplinary relationships among health care team members at all levels of the organization.
Ability to develop and maintain effective interpersonal relationships with hospital and medical staff.
Demonstrates creativity, integrity and initiative.
Ability to prioritize, organize and manage multiple projects.
Demonstrates ability to problem solve.
Ability to develop and implement educational programs related to risk management and patient safety.
